What I’m Watching: Anime – Fairy Tail

While this is one of my favorite Japanese series, it’s anime adaptation ended today. Fairy Tail is a fantasy shounen Japanese manga series that was adapted into an anime. It’s manga publication began in 2006 and it’s anime began airing in 2009. The series was created by Hiro Mashima. The anime consists of 175 episodes.

The story of Fairy Tail is set in the world of Earthland, a land filled with countless types of  magic and mystical creatures. The nation of Fiore is the main setting in which the city of Magnolia is stationed. In Magnolia is the story’s titular wizard guild, places where mages and wizards gather to trade information and work: Fairy Tail. Lucy is a young mage who aims for Fairy Tail. One day, she meets  Natsu and his flying cat, Happy, who invites her to join the guild. With Natsu, Lucy teams up with the other main characters and goes on many adventures with them, ranging from crossing worlds and fighting evil mages.

The main characters from season 2 onwards. From left to right: Carla, Gray, Natsu, Wendy, Lucy, Erza and Happy.

The story of Fairy Tail revolves around several wizards of the eponymous guild. There’s Natsu Dragneel, a boy who practices Fire Dragon Slaying Magic and was raised by a dragon seven years prior to the series. Natsu’s partner is his blue cat that can sprout wings via Aera Magic: Happy. In the first episode of the series, Natsu meets Lucy Heartfilia and in the third episode, the mages form a team. Lucy is a Celestial Spirit Wizard, summoning spirits from another world to help her in battle. Gray Fullbuster, an Ice Mage joins their team, as well as the Requip(changing weapons and armors) Mage Erza Scarlet. Eventually, a Sky Dragon Slayer, Wendy Marvell and her cat, Carla join the crew. The story centers around these characters, their adventures and their interactions with other wizards whether from their own guild or other guilds.

What I think makes Fairy Tail enjoyable is the story, action, humor and emotion. While the series’ originality is debatable, it has a good story. The plot lines are often linked together and sometimes, the ending is not always obvious. One of Hiro Mashima’s greatest strengths is his incorporating mysteries such as the unknown Eclipse Project and the disappearance of the dragons. The action is well done with often dazzling results. Fairy Tail definitely has it’s laugh out loud moments, whether it’s light or serious comedy. It’s emotions are well played, since who knows how many times I’ve cried during the series, as well as get excited from the action and cliffhangers.

Fairy Tail is a story of friendship. I think it’s a must try-out anime, and is definitely one of my favorites.

As Natsu says, “I’m all fired up!”
